Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates club history in a pivotal European tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.
At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
