Torrential Downpours Worsen Conditions for Displaced Gazans, Officials Caution
Persistent precipitation over the last seven days have compounded the already dire living conditions of the hundreds of thousands of uprooted civilians in the Gaza Strip, as reported by aid organizations.
"Awful" Conditions Brings Severe Threats
A representative characterized the recent storm as "horrendous", with rain so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.
"Last night was truly horrendous for the families. The storms were so intense... And the gales were so forceful," noted the representative.
There is grave concern that children sheltering in temporary structures in damp clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Casualties and Extensive Loss
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has died from exposure and no fewer than 11 other people have died in building collapses triggered by the harsh conditions.
Further statements indicate a increased number of casualties. Spokespeople said that numerous residential buildings had collapsed completely and scores had sustained partial collapse.
- Nearly 55,000 families harmed by the weather.
- More than 40 designated shelters inundated.
- Countless residents required to find new shelter.
Relief Operations Considered Insufficient
Organizations have increased distribution of tarpaulins, warm covers and garments following the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid entering.
"Officials are working relentlessly to provide that assistance and to distribute it, but the magnitude of the necessities is so enormous that we still have a great number of people and minors who are really enduring hardship each evening," stated one representative.
Ongoing Issues and Truce Terms
The next stage of the ceasefire encompasses proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of personnel, and other provisions.
Aid organizations have underscored the imperative for "expanded and ongoing relief to meet pressing and ongoing needs."
The conflict was sparked by an assault in October 2023. Subsequent military operations have led to a high number of casualties in the area, according to health ministry reports.
