Forecasters are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
