Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

He commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward following their development".

The prominent academic, who previously headed Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his decision to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This news comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on this week to approve a measure that would require the US justice department to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for signature. He has said he expects to sign the legislation, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of financier-linked messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The emails revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to link the academic to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, Summers stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the people most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, announced that Summers was not associated with the institution.

Summers joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
