Amateur players are being offered an opportunity to win one million Australian dollars when they compete against elite players - headed by top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz - in a one-point battle before January's Australian Open

Organizers of the Melbourne major have unveiled the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will pair 10 amateur players against top-ranked players in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Competition Operates

Competitors are set to play 'the classic hand game' to establish who gets to serve or return, and whoever wins the point will advance to the next round

The champion of the event will receive approximately half a million pounds

For comparison, players who reached the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

Previous Comparable Tournaments

The US Open hosted a redesigned, independent combined gender tournament in August which prompted top singles players to take part, with the winners receiving a million-dollar prize

The Melbourne tournament held its debut quick-fire event in the current season, but the cash prize was A$60,000 and it generated little publicity

One top competitor was the only top-10 player participating, and his campaign finished when he directed the sole serving chance allowed into the mesh in his quarter-final

Competition Specifics

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will function, but it is projected to mirror a comparable structure to the most recent iteration

The top competitors will be permitted to make one service and the amateurs two times - as is the usual procedure in conventional tennis

While it is uncertain how the bracket will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the venue will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The final stages will occur in a nighttime schedule instead of early afternoon

Entry Requirements

Any Australians - or international players who have registered with the governing body - can participate in 'One Point Slam' events at their neighborhood facilities

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a draw, with a single non-professional from every region and area chosen to participate in the 'championship round' in a night session on mid-January

There will also be a qualifying draw in December which non-professionals, lower ranked pros, well-known figures and athletic celebrities can participate in

It starts on early January and the pair of champions will advance to Wednesday's 'championship match' with the other eight amateurs and elite competitors

"No matter your experience, the ultimate winner will walk away with the prize. Registrations will start imminently at venues throughout the nation"

Tournament officials said there were "additional stars to be unveiled imminently", while the official website mentioned "famous personalities" would be participating
