Cameroon Political Opposition Leader to Face Legal Action Concerning Election Unrest, Authorities Announces

Numerous in Cameroon show outrage that the president has secured an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he provoked "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

At least 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during clashes between security forces and demonstrators since Cameroon's election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader asserts that he was the true winner, a assertion rejected by the governing party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the global community, with the UN, African Union and European Union calling for moderation.

Official's Claims

On Tuesday, Nji charged the opposition figure of coordinating what he referred to as "unlawful" rallies causing the loss of lives, and also condemned him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, obtained the October 12 vote with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had earlier stated that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

On election result day, he claimed that armed men used lethal force on protesters gathered near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least two individuals.

Probe Revealed

On Tuesday, the interior minister announced that an inquiry would be started into violent incidents prior to and following the publication of the vote outcome.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he commented, without giving a exact count of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that a number of members of the security forces also suffered major harm.

Current Situation

Even though Nji asserted the situation throughout Cameroon was now manageable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where protesters set up roadblocks on Tuesday, and burnt tyres on the roads.

Observers warn that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a political crisis.
