Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Secure Sentimental Victory Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the ground as Nottingham Forest fans celebrated a further result against Malmö. A great deal has transpired since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the continental trophy in the year 1979, but Forest still treasure those glorious moments. Similarly, significant changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team looking reinvigorated and earning a convincing win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the Europa League.

Gaining Momentum with Third Straight Win

For Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and further built on the momentum gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any real jeopardy or nerves.

It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third clash between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.

Forest leaned into the heritage, honoring the legends of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were also in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together before the match. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing reception when they gathered on the pitch 15 minutes before the start, and a typically superb tifo was shown in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the remaining section was unfurled as the players emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. Another brilliant tifo showed Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the evening? It was pretty good, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a two-goal lead by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defense captained by their own academy product captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since March.

Another Strike Confirms Control

Yates was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his free header saved by the shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the loose ball from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a rare start and only his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was turned wide off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, the son of former Man City forward Uwe, and an free Milenkovic had earlier had a powerful header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. Yates had a volley blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

Forest then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the side that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also scored three times, though he called on substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It proved a flawless evening for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the match long since sewn up and subsequently brought on 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of producing of thrills, as well.
